Petr Piokomy is a qualified specialist personal trainer in stroke and neurological rehabilitation, and has been working in this field for the past 16 years. For the last 7 of those, he's been an associate of the ARNI Institute.
To keep this service running, ARNI relies heavily on donations and a small portion of commission from training sessions. Compared to private neuro rehab centres, ARNI offers a highly affordable and effective alternative - but they need support to keep going.
Here's how Petr is helping:
On Friday, September 25, 2026, ARNI instructor Petr will be taking on 13 Valleys challenge in Lake District in effort to raise awareness and funds for ARNI. This is around 114 miles throughout the national park with over 7,000 metres of elevation gain. This will be the longest and most challenging run he has run and is classed as ''brutal'' difficulty.
This is no small challenge - but it’s nothing compared to what many stroke survivors face every day.
If you can spare anything at all, we'd be be truly grateful for your support. Every donation helps ARNI deliver life-changing rehabilitation to someone who needs it.

Repetition is a critical ingredient during stroke recovery. Repetition activates neuroplasticity; which is your brain’s mechanism for rewiring itself. This is how you can rebuild your skills and overcome the effects of a stroke.

Had a Stroke? Now What? is a book for stroke survivors, their families and anyone else who supports them. This book contains a wealth of practical information a stroke survivor needs to understand their injury, through to guidance on rehabilitation and life after stroke. This book is written by ARNI Director Tom Balchin who makes clear his aim is ‘to help you beat stroke’.

It’s really important that survivors are guided to autonomous retraining efforts, if possible, in order that they may fulfil goals and thrive rather than decline, become dependent on others or just re-enter the care pathway.
“This is really hard to achieve, but one by one, over the years, ARNI has helped a vast amount of people. I’m proud of this and of the way that, by its sincere efforts, ARNI has gained the trust and support of professionals in neurorehabilitation over the years.” Tom Balchin, ARNI Director

Video call technology just saved Richard's life after a stroke! This recent case in Northampton shows how digital tools are assisting emergency care; when a patient presented with a rare brain stem stroke, the rapid intervention of specialists via a remote link proved absolutely vital.
So, brain stem strokes are notoriously difficult to identify, and any delay in treatment can have devastating consequences for long term recovery. But the use of a high-definition video feed allowed doctors to spot the subtle clinical signs that might otherwise have been missed. This tech means that expert neurological assessment is no longer restricted by your physical location.
It's currently being trialled across several Trusts... so people have a better chance of receiving life-saving thrombolysis regardless of which hospital they first arrive at. Routine implementation across the whole UK network is expected to accelerate as more regional hubs adopt these virtual consultant platforms.
ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says that every second saved in the emergency room is a second gained for your future rehabilitation... 📱🚑🩺

Your brain is very good at problem-solving. We are masters at changing the environment and our suit ourselves. Our imagination, reasoning, emotional subtlety and toughness make it possible. You can see how easily you can set everything up so that you can make do without the use of one arm, in just the same way as those who lose a limb or one or more of their operating senses. But you know that there is no need to do so; you just need to find the right route.
If you like this post then please share it with others. Each time that you share a post, you can directly help other people – as who knows which people in the world might find us and gain, either directly from the charity or simply by being able to copy an ‘innovative and useful’ move/trick of the trade that might help them manage after stroke.
Every time you share, you could directly help someone – as knowledge is power ;)

You must take on board that results with the hand are not instantaneous, rather, you will find (as all our stroke survivors do) they are very slow and incremental. You will do better by using a combination of strategies at different times during your recovery process. But don’t make the biggest mistake of and think that you cannot progress to a very good degree with your hand using the ‘slow and steady cooking’ method, and don’t even begin with task-related work.
You will reach plateaus where you feel no new movement will occur. But this is ok… and this is the time to be creative.

Major breakthrough in stroke recovery for aphasia patients! Researchers at Syracuse University have identified how different parts of the brain take over when your speech centres are damaged; this study shows that the right hemisphere provides MUCH more than a secondary backup.
If you have aphasia then you've doubtless felt the frustration when words we want to say just won't come. Interestingly, he team led by Professor Ellyn Riley has discovered that because healthy brain regions reorganise themselves in specific, predictable patterns, it's possible to using advanced, cutting edge imaging now to track these neural shifts - meaning that scientists can now pinpoint exactly which areas are helping or hindering your recovery.
This research means therapy also can be tailored to your unique brain map... and it moves away from a one size fits all approach to speech rehabilitation.
Implementation in the UK health system will likely take many years of clinical trials before it becomes a possibility for standard NHS offering - and a shed-load more of our taxes inputted to pay for. But ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says we stroke survivors would MUCH rather have our money spent on this kind of contribution than most of the stuff (say no more...) that it's being spent on at the moment! 🧠🗣️💪
