The worth of any approach to stroke recovery comes down to three things:
1. How well it can be understood?
2. Does it work for you?
3. How well can you incorporate it into your daily life?

The human brain is powerful, but what happens when it faces life-altering trauma? This webinar is worth taking the time to watch. Can YOU help Tom complete his ARNI Instructor training?! 🧠💙
Tom Bodle is a student of mine (Dr Tom), whom I've also known for a number of years now before he decided to come on the course.
He works as a health and wellbeing development officer for Leicestershire, running cardiac rehab, falls prevention, exercise referral and physical activity programmes for people with long-term health conditions. And, he's nearly at the finish line of his intensive ARNI Specialist Stroke Rehabilitation qualification (FRETS) with me!
He needs just one thing: a stroke survivor willing to chat with him or email with him to share their story so he can complete his case study. If you're willing to help, Tom would love to hear about your stroke: ie, what happened, when, what rehab you received, what's worked, what hasn't, what you'd most like to achieve in your recovery etc etc.
Please do help Tom - just reply to this post and then I (Dr Tom) will IM you on Tom's behalf (so you have a reply from me personally) - and I'll give you his contact details and will then ask you to call or email him at a time that suits you best...
HUGE THANKS! If you can help him, please comment below AND/or send us a message and we'll put you in touch with Tom directly. ARNI Stroke Rehab & Recovery says: every new ARNI Instructor means more survivors getting the right help: and Tom just needs your story to get there. 💙🧠

Hi all, you know what - you're all being so kind with this... maybe what we do is if I take everyone's name and contact you when another student needs help in this way... the reason we've not needed this before is that everyone up until now has (is required to) attend ARNI Training Day - and so the Case Study naturally is about the person they rehab/train on a one to one basis for 2 hours. For the last course, they were given an option by me to do their Case Study about a stroke survivor they either know personally or can contact via ARNI charity... hence Tom's request via me... So yes, do please send in your indication that you might be willing to kindly help by speaking with one of my (specialist-level) students in the future (next cohort will be writing case studies from start of December to mid January...). THANK YOU SO MUCH - DR TOM

Stroke rehab that trains your arm AND teaches your brain to feel it again. 🧠🖐️ If your affected hand still doesn't feel right, or your arm still isn't doing what you ask of it months or years after stroke, new research published in Nature Medicine mnay be worth hearing about.
Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna and ETH Zurichhave developed 'MultiSensy' – a platform combining immersive virtual reality with electrical nerve stimulation applied to the skin, so that when you reach for, grasp or pinch a virtual object in the headset, you actually feel it in your hand at the same time.
34 patients more than three months post-stroke completed 12 sessions over three weeks; the MultiSensy group showed nearly twice the improvement on the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for upper limb motor impairment as the conventional rehabilitation control group... and similar advantages on the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT).
We all know that after stroke, some of us struggle to feel touch in the more-affected hand and may perceive the arm as distorted in size, shape or position. As lead author Valerio Aurucci of ETH Zurich puts it, 'patients often have difficulty not only moving the affected limb, but also feeling it and perceiving it correctly.'
MultiSensy is interesting to hear about as nearly double the Fugl-Meyer improvement over conventional rehab in chronic stroke survivors is a result worth paying attention to, yes, but this is still at research stage; no UK trial is registered and no NHS adoption pathway has been announced – so routine availability is unlikely before the early 2030s at the earliest.
Meanwhile at ARNI, the ARNI Instructors and I work on survivors' sensation, perception and movement together from the earliest stages (separating them out is really a bit of a false economy in upp#ARNIstrokerehab #virtualrealityu#strokerecoveryh#UpperLimbRehabi#StrokeResearchery #UpperLimbRehab #StrokeResearch

Dare I say it's so typical that it's not available UK or NHS UK..... When are they gonna wake up, look at the projection s for stroke going forward..... All they understand is £££ so ..... Treat stroke quicker, better, effectively, reduce care costs, hospital stay costs and benefit costs..... Sorry Dr Tom I'm just in a place where I genuinely no longer feel safe being treated by the NHS. Basic steps are being missed, not followed and yet if you highlight it, *you* are the fault 😞😞

On bad days, remind yourself, I AM A SURVIVOR. If anyone calls you a stroke victim, immediately correct them and proudly announce, “I am a stroke survivor.” You have worked hard for this. You’ve pushed yourself for this. You’ve overcome obstacles for this. You’ve earned this.
The difference between calling yourself a stroke victim and a stroke survivor is an extremely important mindset shift for your recovery. Words are very powerful, and they shape how we view ourselves and the world. In the case of those who have experienced a stroke, words can give you the strength to propel yourself forward to be the best you can be after a stroke, versus merely subsisting at your current level of recovery.

Petr Piokomy is a qualified specialist personal trainer in stroke and neurological rehabilitation, and has been working in this field for the past 16 years. For the last 7 of those, he's been an associate of the ARNI Institute.
To keep this service running, ARNI relies heavily on donations and a small portion of commission from training sessions. Compared to private neuro rehab centres, ARNI offers a highly affordable and effective alternative - but they need support to keep going.
Here's how Petr is helping:
On Friday, September 25, 2026, ARNI instructor Petr will be taking on 13 Valleys challenge in Lake District in effort to raise awareness and funds for ARNI. This is around 114 miles throughout the national park with over 7,000 metres of elevation gain. This will be the longest and most challenging run he has run and is classed as ''brutal'' difficulty.
This is no small challenge - but it’s nothing compared to what many stroke survivors face every day.
If you can spare anything at all, we'd be be truly grateful for your support. Every donation helps ARNI deliver life-changing rehabilitation to someone who needs it.

I like Olivia 😃
By improving mobility and coordination in the legs, feet, and core, you can improve balance.
It doesn't need to be complicated. Simply standing still, somewhere safe, and turning your head from side to side is working your balance. Start off slowing and as you get better increase the number of head turns; and the speed. Imagine you're standing at the side of a road looking to see if there's any traffic coming.

A great tip for you (from The Successful Stroke Survivor book): Actively make an effort to turn each foot out at 45 degrees on each step. Try it. This one tip may be all you need to start making excellent progress with your walking. It really does work for some people! The affected leg is instantly more controllable because you are sending strong signals to it rather than just stumbling along.

This sounds worth trying.
Will encourage my husband to try this.
I’ll give it a try!
I try this but it's so tiring on my brain! But it does help ..... trying no AFO I'm definitely putting the brunt of support on my lower back too (getting sports massage for this and stretching)
It’s great to see survivors sharing walking tips and encouraging each other. 💚 After a stroke, many people have to relearn movement patterns, and paying attention to how you place your feet can sometimes help improve awareness and confidence while walking. A few things to remember: Always practice walking exercises safely and follow the guidance of your physiotherapist. Focus on quality of movement rather than rushing for more steps. Use support or assistive devices if you need them — safety comes first. Celebrate every improvement, even small ones. 😊 My specialist also recommended THE STROKE RECOVERY ROADMAP By LYDIA T. SAWYER (You can grab it on Am@zøn.). It helped me with healthier meal ideas, recovery support, wellness habits, simple exercises, better daily balance, symptom management strategies, and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. I found it helpful for building routines and understanding how to support my recovery journey. Every stroke recovery story is different, but sharing experiences can give others hope and new ideas to discuss with their rehab team. 💚 Keep working toward your goals, one step at a time. 😊✨
