AFTER STROKE: IMPROVING STANDING & WALKING BALANCE - It’s completely normal to feel worried or scared about carrying out any balance exercise. They are challenging and all retraining away from a seated position carries a risk of falling.
But it’s vital to continually extend your boundaries whilst minimising the risk to your safety. And it’s equally vital that you ask your therapist or specialist trainer how to do this.

Are you a stroke survivor with balance difficulties? If so, you’re NOT alone!
Balance and gait are essential components of functional movement, yet balance and mobility problems are among the most frequent and disabling effects of stroke, with 7 in 8 strokes affecting those over 44 years of age.
Balance (both standing and walking) training is the only effective treatment for balance disorders, as recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) UK.
We can help you regain your balance. Call us on 0203 053 0111 or email support@arni.uk.com to find out if there's a trainer near you who can help you,

One of the exercises in the Successful Stroke Survivor Book is called Baggy Trousers and its to get your arms swinging when you walk. Remember the song Baggy Trousers by Madness? (you're humming it now aren't you?) Think of how they swung their arms in the video;. That's how you need to swing your arms when walking. All you need to do is swing your good arm and the other does the opposite way. It's really simple! Obviously the book explains it much bett#strokerehabilitations#strokeexerciset#neurorehabe#StrokeRehabr#ARNIstrokerehabh#neuroplasticityh#strokerecoveryc#strokesurvivorscan #strokesurvivorscan ... Yes, now my ear worm for the day, but a great reminder to swing those arms
Balance control is an active process maintained by the central nervous system to keep the body upright. The brain relearns how to interpret the information and forms new movement plans to send out to your muscles to adjust for changes in your balance.

Many stroke survivors will have immediate problems in one of these eight functional areas below. So, these are some of the most important things that a competent therapist or trainer should immediately begin to test for (putting assessment of the upper limb aside for the moment), to assess current capability and tackle with you sequentially:
1. Getting up from a chair to standing
2. Weightbearing and balancing upright
3. Getting to the floor from a chair
4. Getting up from the floor to a chair
5. Walking with a helper
6. Getting down to the floor without support
7. Getting up from the floor without support
8. Walking with no helper
The above can be viewed as an initial training tick-list in order of precedence, although it’s variable, depending on your needs.
if you want some help with these call us on 0203 053 0111 or email support@arni.uk.co to find out if there's a trainer near you.
